The Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by Adolph Weinman has long been one of the most popular series of classic United States coins to collect, right up there with Morgan Dollars and Lincoln Wheat Cents. On Sunday, March 16, collectors have the opportunity to obtain a Mint State example of the key date 1921-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar graded MS63 by PCGS at GreatCollections. This brilliant satiny specimen, which is pedigreed to the Ron Stone Collection on the label but is selling as part of the Friar Park Collection of U.S. Coins, features light toning around the rim.

About the Key Date 1921-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar

While it’s true that the mintage of 548,000 coins is more than the rare 1921 and 1921-D Half Dollars put together, the 1921-S is one of the biggest condition rarities of the entire series. It is a hard coin to find in About Uncirculated, and especially rare in Mint State. Beyond the level of the piece offered in Sunday’s sale, the 1921-S is extremely difficult to get in high Mint State, with only a few Gems known to exist.

The average 1921-S Walking Liberty Half looks frosty, and strikes tend to be weak. The example being sold by GreatCollections has an appealing frosty luster and a relatively sharp strike. As mentioned above, it was formerly part of the Ron Stone Collection, a high-ranking PCGS Registry Set in the Walking Liberty Half Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1916-1947) category.

At the time of publication, the highest of six bids on this 1921-S is $31,000.
