By CoinWeek ….
For Mercury Dime collectors, December starts off strong at GreatCollections as bidding ends on the first for this toned, top-pop Proof 1941 Mercury Dime graded PR68+ by CAC. PCGS has graded only seven at that grade with none finer, and NGC reports only one grading event a half-point finer at PF69.

Interestingly, while almost the entire run of 1941 Mercury Dime Proofs came off the assembly line with a brilliant finish, only one example has ever earned a Cameo designation in 30+ years of third-party grading.

Instead, a collector is much more likely to encounter toned or tarnished specimens of the 1941 Mercury Dime Proof, and attractively toned examples like the one on offer usually sell for a premium. The current piece features dark annular toning on most of the coin’s surface except for the center and most of Liberty’s head. This coin last sold elsewhere in May 2024 for $7,500.
